研究的纵向数据来自2,511名在日本糖尿病登记注册的2型糖尿病患者。为了评价血清胆红素水平与糖尿病肾病发生或进展的独立相关性，研究人员采用logistic回归分析校正潜在的混杂因素。中位随访时间503.4天(范围238-777天)。患者年龄、BMI和HbA1c 水平均值分别为65.2岁、24.7kg/m2和7.5%(58.5mmol/mol)。

结果显示，基线血清胆红素水平与基线和注册1年后尿白蛋白/肌酐比值显著相关(P<0.001)。血清胆红素水平处于第二、第三和第四四分位数时，对应的经多变量校正的从微量蛋白尿进展为大量蛋白尿的比值比(ORs)分别为0.89、0.93和0.33，呈线性变化趋势，且具有统计学显著性差异(P=0.032)。但是，当校正血红蛋白水平后，这种趋势消失。

研究表明，2型糖尿病患者血清胆红素水平与糖尿病肾病进展有关，且独立于可能的混杂因素。血清胆红素水平可能是连接血红蛋白水平和肾病进展相互联系的因素。
