阿尔茨海默病(AD)和帕金森病(PD)都是原发性的中枢神经系统退化疾病,发病原因尚不明确。从临床症状来看,多起病隐匿而缓慢,记忆和认知功能不断恶化,且不可逆。诸多研究显示,AD和PD最早出现的症状是嗅觉障碍,这也就意味着嗅觉障碍可能比认知障碍更能作为 AD和PD 的预警,而通过嗅觉测试可能更早预知是否得了这些可怕的神经退行性疾病。
近日,奥塔哥大学(University of Otago)研究小组试图开发非侵入式的可穿戴设备,通过刺激嗅觉-神经系统,在短期内缓解症状,进而阻止或逆转病程。
研究人员借助电场建模对多电极配置,通过可穿戴Google眼镜原型,在皮肤上产生细小的电子脉冲,以刺激嗅觉神经系统。该模型已在脑部手术过程中通过直接人脑记录进行了验证,结果显示,原型设备有效地将定向刺激到大脑的嗅觉-神经区域,让内嗅皮层更活跃。

研究团队正在与Soterix Medical公司进行合作,将在临床试验中测试其可穿戴刺激器。研究人员表示,希望通过这种治疗方式以缓解症状或抑制AD和PD的发展。目前,越来越多的研究显示,AD和PD的最早期症状包括嗅觉受损,希望在理解了其机理后,进而提高 AD和PD的诊断率。
