已经发现无环类维生素A，一种来源于维生素A的人造化合物，可以防止肝癌（HCC）的复发。现在科学家已经发现该化合物能够靶向癌症干细胞，阻止它们产生新的肿瘤细胞。

HCC是一种高度致命的癌症，每年在全世界造成约600,000人死亡，使其成为非小细胞肺癌后第二大致命癌症。高致死率的原因之一是其高复发率。尽管手术和其他治疗方法在最初是有效的，但癌症经常复发。因此，研究人员正在积极寻找防止复发的方法，最近发现无环类维生素A可有效阻止肿瘤的复发。然而，科学家们并不确定它为什么起作用。

为了解答这一问题，由RIKEN综合医学中心的Soichi Kojima领导的一个研究小组研究了暴露于无环类微生物A的细胞的转录组，发现与未处理的细胞相比，它们具有MYCN低表达特征，该基因通常在肿瘤中表达并与不良预后相关。进一步实验显示，MYCN表达的降低在功能上导致较慢的细胞周期进展，增殖和集落形成，并导致更多的细胞死亡，这意味着无环类维生素A减缓了癌症的发展。然后该研究小组专注于“癌症干细胞”的作用，这种特殊细胞能够在化疗或其他治疗的冲击下幸存下来，然后分化成新的癌细胞，从而导致复发，同样无环类维生素A也能选择性杀灭这类肿瘤干细胞。
