BWH的研究人员过去研究大脑和肠道之间的关联是为了进一步理解多发性硬化。尽管有些研究已经阐述过肠道微生物的副产物如何促进大脑中的炎症,但是目前的这项研究首次报告了微生物副产物如何直接作用于小神经胶质细胞以预防炎症。该团队报告称,肠道微生物在分解色氨酸时产生的副产物能通过对影响小胶质细胞来抑制大脑中的炎症。
为了进行这项研究,该团队使用小鼠模型测试了肠道微生物和饮食变化对多发性硬化的影响。他们发现,通过分解色氨酸产生的化合物可以穿越血脑屏障,并激活限制神经退行性病变的抗炎通路。研究人员还研究了人类多发性硬化的大脑样本,发现了相同通路和相关因素存在的证据。
最近,这一通路被激活发现与阿尔兹海默症和恶性胶质瘤相关。Ann Romney神经疾病研究中心的Quintana博士召集了各路专家加速对这种疾病的治疗方法的研究,还包括多发性硬化症、帕金森症和ALS(卢伽雷氏病)。
