从1994/95年间特隆姆瑟研究的第四次调查中,研究人员获得25992名受试者的基本信息。从入组到2010年12月31号期间,评估受试者卒中的发生。应用Cox回归模型分析,校正年龄,性别,体重指数,吸烟,血红蛋白水平,白细胞计数,血小板计数,高血压,总胆固醇,甘油三酯,糖尿病以及红细胞计数后,计算卒中发生的HR值及95%CI。随访时间中位数为15.8年,共1152名受试者首次发生卒中。RDW每增加1%,卒中发生的风险增加13%(多变量HR:1.13,95%CI 1.07-1.20)。在多变量分析中,与RDW值得最低五分之一受试者相比, RDW值最高五分之一受试者的卒中风险增加37% (HR: 1.37, 95 % CI: 1.11-1.69)。与RDW最低五分之一的受试者相比,高于95%RDW值的患者,卒中的危险因素增加55% (HR: 1.55, 95 % CI: 1.16-2.06)。排除贫血患者(1102名)后,所有的危险评估没有改变。

RDW值与卒中发生后一年或者整个随访期间死亡的风险增加无关。RDW值与一般人群中卒中的发生相关,并且独立于贫血和传统的动脉粥样硬化等危险因素。
